Put A Little Effort Into It!

Love.  It excites us, it stumps us, at times it confuses the hell out of us, it can also be the cause of some of the happiest times and some of the saddest times of our lives and yet, we still seek it.

Why?  I believe that it is truly human nature.  I believe that deep down inside it does something to 'complete us'.  When we are loved, whether it be by ourselves, our family, our friends or by just another human-being it makes us feel 'whole'.  I'm not talking the 'I love you' and the peck on the lips kind of love that you get right before you walk out the door.  I'm talking the 'I f'ing love the hell out of you love'.  That's love.

Right after my divorce I decided to do a little soul-searching as many of us do after something like that.  I ended up right back in church, but this time a different kind of church, Buckhead Church in Atlanta, Georgia.  Andy Stanley is the speaker/pastor there. And boy is he goooooood!  I was brought up in a church-going family and this was the first time in my adult life that I felt right about going to a church.  One of the series that he taught was on love, "Falling Staying in Love."   You can find it here on --> Amazon.  I bought it and have since shared it with tons of friends.  Damn good stuff.

So many of us get caught up in our daily task-lists.  We forget about putting effort into our current relationships.  Here's a few thoughts...

  • Plan activities (dates) together.  Make it a habit of spending quality time together.  (Yes, even if you're married, date!)
  • Look in the mirror, would you date you?  Yes, great!  No, work on it! (Be honest!)
  • Call them.  Don't text.  Make them important by calling them.
  • Talk, not about just logistics.  Communication is key to a successful relationship.
  • Smile.  A smile at your partner cost noda and can mean the world to them! (Oh, a great BIG smile is SEXY!)
  • Give them attention, and not just when you want sex.
  • Be respectful.  Would you talk to a stranger the same way, no? change it.

In closing, no matter if you're single, dating, married, divorced or just plain confused, be sure to put a little effort into yourself and your relationships.  The message that rang loud and clear after listening to Andy Stanley speak was this, don't worry so much about what you're going to get out of the relationship.   Instead if each of you focus on one another then everyone is taken care of.  This takes teamwork, after-all isn't that what relationships are meant to be?  I hope you take time to listen to the DVD/CD.  It will help.  I'll be sharing more tips and thoughts as this blog progresses.
